Hello everyone, inspired by the Nick Cave song "Where the wild roses grow" I wanted to do a bit more elaborate piece for the CS3000 challenge. My first sketch was a pretty straightforward caricature:

While this got a fair bit of positive comments I wanted to try another approach, with more exaggeration:

So, then I realized it would be nice to add a little story, so the composition was extended to include a Kylie, well, and here the final piece, hope you like it, comments & critique are welcome! Ariel Medel, founder of Caricaturama suggested a few tweaks for this version, more background, moon etc. which made it more complete- thanks Ariel!

Hello all, my last piece received an enormous response on Caricaturama Showdown 3000- thank you for all this wonderful feedback! I really appreciate it and it makes me happy to see that may artwork can generate that kind of reaction.

I thought perhaps some are interested in how this piece was done, here comes:

I always look how people go about a new challenge, which is a great in Caricaturama as you can see many different approaches. So I decided that her chin would really be something to stress...thinking also about what is typical of her I came up with her shoe fetish thing in Sex and the city...after a few reference pics it clicked.

I usually start with digital sketches, this time it was on paper:

At this point the sketch contained enough structure to start blocking in colour.

The reference shot was very light, so I started to enhance contrast, especially in areas where light met dark.

The hair was done again with Chris Wahl's wonderful hair brush (the whole piece was painted in CS4).

The hair was backlit and I painted back and forth a few times until it felt right in terms of contrast.

At the end I thought that the background could use a colour that made it pop- I also changed the proportion of the canvas, as the long shadow needed more room. Changed the contrast a bit more, made some more details- almost done.

Here some details, which were added right at the end:

The wart was done according to the reference shot, apparently it is slightly transparent...

The lashes I did on a separate layer to get some nice strokes down which do not smear underlying areas.

I don't get around to do much free work these days, here is an Anne Hathaway that I did a few weeks ago, when there was more time for such kind of work. The finished piece is 90 x 60 cm.
This was inspired by a very captivating shot of Anne Hathaway - in a sense she is not a classic beauty, I really like the quality of her expression in this one- hope you like!

Pictures at an exhibition: ILLU-Styria

Hi all, since my exhibition is still on, here some shots from the location, Winery Schilhan in South Styria, Austria:

The architecture of the tasting room and cellar is really something- it's been dubbed "Crocodile rock" due to the fascination the owner, Willi Schilhan, shows for rock music. The building literally snuggles on top of the hill's crest, right inbetween the vinyards- to give you an impression what it is like there:

Although this wasn't taken right at that specific winery it gives a good impression of the lovely landscape. A friend of mine called it once jokingly "The shire" referring to Tolkien's book- except people aren't midgets there and only some have hairy feet ;)
